How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days 2003 Movie Review With Spoilers

Share

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is a 2003 movie with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson leading. The movie is a Rom-Com which is loosely based on the picture book by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long.

Yes, it’s already been almost 20 years since the movie was released. I watched it today on Netflix and here is my review.

Everything I Liked About How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

The Narrative

The story revolves around two ambitious individuals, Ben Barry and Andie Anderson. In short, the movie’s title How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is what Andie does, first intentionally and, then unwillingly.

The main characters simply love their job and would cross the line to excel. The idea that they adopt might have been inspiring then, but not now, anymore. We will talk about the situation later in the segment.

If you have nothing important, watching the movie for the plot, while you switch off the modern mindset will make you enjoy the twists and turns the narrative has to offer.

The story is nice. You might also find it relatable sometimes. I liked it when they met and started dating. I also liked it, when Andie visited Ben’s parent’s home and they had a great time together. I liked the plot every time more when they wholeheartedly showed their real feelings for each other.

The Characters

I enjoyed Ben more than Andie. It might be because I am a woman and seeing how Ben treated Andie even after the trauma she was causing him with her voluntary craziness, was sophisticated of him. Yes, Ben was also focusing on the bet, but his attempt to win was subtle while she was more dominant.

I liked Ben and her friends. They all seemed dependable throughout the movie.

Ben from the very start was nice. He respected Andie and tolerated her intolerable craziness. If I was in Ben’s shoes, I would have broken up with the beauty, on the 4th day itself. But he was more into making the Gall fall in love with him. I bet, every girl who watched the movie back in 2003 loved Ben Barry and despised all the girls presented in the plot. Every girl was given toxic traits. Like why?

Except for Ben’s mother and sister, I must mention that.

I liked Ben’s family. They were very homely and warm towards Andie even though Ben never introduced her as his girlfriend to the family. They welcomed her and made her feel happy and included.

The Direction

The movie takes a sparky start. However, as the movie progresses the direction gets easy to understand. I liked the transformation. I liked how the narrative brought both the primary characters together intertwining their professional life.

I loved how soft and delicate things began to transpire when Ben and Andie visited Staten Island. I loved the sweet time prepared for the audience to enjoy. Donald Petrie did a good job here.

Everything I Disliked About How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

The Narrative

The narrative might have been a hit 20 years ago, but now, honestly, it was purely toxic. Andie used Ben to write an article. I cannot seem to ignore the fact that it’s borderline toxic. She was doing all the crazy stuff to push Ben’s button repeatedly. I know it was for her job but the job she didn’t even like and quit at the end. I mean she played with the heart of a man to just write an article.

Let’s talk about Lana. She is toxic on a whole new level. She was spattering about the article in an event with a stranger like what was that,? Is this called being professional? She wanted to use someone’s else misery to make a profit for her business which is so cruel.

I kept wondering what made Andie so hurt when she came to know about Ben’s intention. He wanted to make a girl fall in love to get a job. Yes, he wanted to break up since Andie was acting crazy. His action was justified at the moment. I mean I would break up too.

But he did not intend to split up after everything got lovey-dovey at Staten Island. It was pure love.

Now, when Andie comes to know about the bet, she is furious, like why? She traumatized the man with lies, insulted the man even got him punched, and put him in uncomfortable situations a lot of times. Now she is angry. Clap for the lady everyone!!!

Her female friends were toxic too, since they supported her in her cruel ploy.

The Ending

The ending was typical. The hero gets to know about the truth just at the right moment which drives him to get back to the girl. A little drama and there he is. Got the girl, and they lived supposedly happily ever after.
