Leave the World Behind – The Narrative and Review

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly deteriorating world, the story follows a group of individuals as they grapple with the sudden and inexplicable breakdown of modern technology. Phones, television, and other essential utilities cease to function, signaling an impending cataclysm that threatens to upend their lives. As chaos ensues, the characters must encounter their deepest fears and confront the unknown in a desperate bid for survival.

Esmail’s direction is masterful, imbuing each scene with a palpable sense of tension and unease. From the hauntingly deserted streets to the claustrophobic confines of their makeshift shelter, every frame is filled with a sense of impending doom that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

But the ending is truly and genuinely disappointing. After sitting on the edge of your seat for 140 minutes you definitely wish for an answer and the consequences. But when you are left pondering and the sudden ending it hurts.

The ensemble cast delivers standout performances, bringing depth and nuance to their respective roles. Julia Roberts shines as the resilient matriarch, navigating the challenges of the apocalypse with determination and grace.

Mahershala Ali exudes quiet strength as a stranger thrust into the midst of chaos, while Ethan Hawke delivers a haunting portrayal of a man grappling with his own mortality. Myha’la and Kevin Bacon round out the ensemble with short yet equally compelling performances, each adding layers to the complex tapestry of the story.

Things You Might Not Like About Leave the World Behind

Leave the World Behind may not be worth watching for several reasons-

  1. Heavy Themes: The film delves into heavy and potentially distressing themes such as societal collapse, paranoia, and impending doom. For viewers seeking light entertainment or escapism, the dark and intense nature of the film may not be enjoyable.

  5. Political and Social Commentary: While the film may offer thought-provoking commentary on issues such as technological dependence and geopolitical tension, it may do so in a heavy-handed or overly didactic manner. This could detract from the viewing experience for those who prefer subtler storytelling.
