Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is an amazing movie that shows relatable contexts like the inability to express emotions, introverts, friendships, new relationships, love, old age, and many more. The center stage is circled around two characters, Cherry and Smile, who are poles apart individuals but their personalities beautifully summarize the phrase that opposites attract.

6th – The First Meet –
It was comprehensively chaotic, yet Cherry was quick enough to observe the braces and Smille’s buckteeth pretty clearly. Without Beaver it was not possible, the encounter seemed like fate. Also, Smile mistakenly picking up Cherry’s phone paves the path to meet Cherry again. As we advance with the narrative, their meetings become frequent after that Beaver incident, isn’t it?
See, it seemed to me that both of them grew interested in each other from the moment their eyes met. Well, it was evident for Smile judging by her extroverted nature. But Cherry being introverted I guess never felt that someone might grow interest in knowing him. So, this might be a possibility of why Cherry was comfortable opening up with Smile on their very first conversation, or it might be Smile’s great personality.
5th – Their First Proper Conversation-
Cherry was open about why he uses headphones which Smile supports instantly calling it a smart trick. However, when asked about the mask, Smile totally avoids the conversation and changes the subject. Cherry being introverted, who could only speak expressively with Haikus felt easy around Smile, and Smile’s extroverted, warm, and welcoming energy did not bother his calm personality at all.
The moment Smile asks him to frame a Haiku he does it even though he is a bit uncomfortable. It seemed that Smile’s presence made him do so and her genuine interest in Cherry was wholehearted. It was actually the moment that gave the movie its title, when words bubble up like soda pop, even though a dominant instance appears some minutes later in the movie.
Nevertheless, coming back to Smile, Smile was not confident enough to openly talk about her buckteeth with the person she barely knew. It’s okay because we all know what happens later right!!
4th Cherry Stops Wearing His Headphones
Well according to the rules of the elderly care center, Cherry was restricted from wearing his headphones even though he was not listening to any music or song. But when he and Smile visited the Fujiyama music store, it was the very first time, that I noticed Cherry was not wearing his headphones on his neck as well.
Smile’s influence and positive energy made him stay present and listen to Smile from a distance. Now, we can see that whenever Cherry met Smile after their first proper conversation, he blushed. Also, Smile getting a job at the elderly care center was enough to make them grow closer and know each other better.
The process of blending with surroundings and being present became natural for Cherry which evidently made him put off his headphones.
3rd The Team To Help Fujiyama
When they visit Fujiyama’s shop, it finally reveals why Mr. Fujiyama is obsessed with the wrapper he is carrying all the time. He is worried that he will forget even though he doesn’t want which makes Cherry and Smile dig deeper into the story and perceive the emotion that Mr Fujiyama expressed. In fact, the Haiku that Cherry and Smile find stuck in the wrapper impacts Cherry at a spiritual level making him work harder to help Mr. Fujiyama.
They do all they can to help the old man remember his wife’s voice which they feel is very important to the old man. The duo takes good advantage of social media and the internet. They also investigated the mall where they were working from top to bottom. Their thorough investigation brings them to realize that the wrapper is the wrapper of an old picture disk which was a trend 50 years back.
Also, they learned that Mr. Fujiyama used to work at Vinyle Press which is currently the elderly care center. Smile and Cherry unhesitantly visit the broadcasting tower as well which gives them the information required to make their mission successful at a greater level.
2nd Smile Asking Cherry Out
Well, by now they have grown significantly fond of each other and it was pretty much expressed by how they behaved. However, the audience knew what Cherry was hiding all this time. Because nothing important was for him in Oda city up until now, things were very easy. But he has Smile in his life who was seemingly his best friend and love interest, both.
So Smile finally manages to ask Cherry out. It was obvious from her end since she was the outgoing one in the relationship they had. And Cherry’s ‘Yes’ was so ‘Cute’.He turned all red. Cherry says Yes in the most subtle way possible which makes the montage euphoric.
1st Cherry Returns To Confess To Smile
Before leaving Oda City Smile and Cherry suffers a pianful Goodbye. The goodbye was so emotionally hurting that Cherry put back his headphones to collect himself and be in his zone for the time being. The representation was symbolic, it’s like with Smile leaving him, he needs his Headphones back to not let any external affair impact his well-being ever again.
Now when we have reached the end of the movie, Smile knows and understands Cherry the most. So, she tries to make things easier for Cherry by going Live on Curiosity to help him witness the dance performance and listen to the record which both of them gave their heart and soul to search.
Smile was confident that Cherry would be watching the live broadcasts. But things get much more magical when Beaver and Toughboy paint the roadway hoardings with Cherry’s Haikus emotionally forcing him to return to Smile and express his genuine emotions that developed for her all this time. He expressed his emotions in Haikus which was so romantic and cute right!!
The moment I never expected to happen since Cherry was very shy and speaking out loud about his romantic emotions in front of strangers is not his thing at all. But thanks to the fireworks everyone except for Smile was focused on him and him only which finally made Smile come out of her mask as well and smile with her buck teeth.
