Espilar, a man who wields a spiral-bladed saber, lures Dankichi and Dr. Elder outside and attacks them. He demands Kenshin’s whereabouts, but Kenshin arrives in time, having realized that a message sent to Dr. Elder was a trap. Despite using numerous thrusts and eventually his fastest attack, Espilar is soundly defeated.

To his shock, Kenshin decides not to kill him. Knowing that a samurai’s katana is his soul, he sees his Sakabato as indicative of his new ways. Ishizu tries to release a vial of smallpox to kill them, but Espilar intervenes. Later, Espilar contemplates his failure to defeat Kenshin, but Dr. Elder encourages him to have smaller aspirations that he can be proud of.

He becomes Dr. Elder’s new bodyguard and shows Kenshin his new saber, inspired by his Sakabato. Before departing for the United States, Dr. Elder reveals her true identity to the people of Yokohama. To his friends’ surprise, Kenshin reveals that this specific story occurred only five days before he met Kaoru.

Things I Liked From Rurouni Kenshin Ep 21

Kenshin’s Mercy: The fact that Kenshin, despite being a formidable warrior, chooses not to kill Espilar after their battle adds depth to his character and proves his Ruroni lifestyle significantly. His mercy and adherence to a new path make him a more empathetic and relatable protagonist.

Espilar’s Redemption: Espilar’s transformation from a formidable foe to Dr. Elder’s bodyguard, guided by smaller yet honorable aspirations, is a positive and redemptive character arc. It showcases the theme of personal growth and second chances.

The symbolism of the Sakabato: The symbolism associated with Kenshin’s Sakabato, representing his commitment to non-lethal methods, adds a layer of depth to the story. It’s a powerful emblem of his changed philosophy.

Teamwork Against a Common Enemy: The teamwork between Kenshin, Dankichi, and Dr. Elder in facing the threat posed by Ishizu and Espilar fosters a sense of camaraderie and unity against a common adversary.

Unexpected Twists: The narrative includes unexpected twists, such as Espilar preventing Ishizu from releasing smallpox, adding anticipation, and keeping the audience engaged.

Encouragement and Positive Messages: Dr. Elder’s encouragement to Espilar to pursue smaller yet meaningful goals carries a positive message about personal growth, resilience, and finding pride in one’s achievements.

Cultural Elements: The incorporation of samurai philosophy, katana symbolism, and the setting in Yokohama provides a rich cultural backdrop that adds authenticity and interest to the story.

TOTT’s On Rurouni Kenshin Ep 21

So we can conclude that it’s truly inspiring to witness Kenshin’s non-lethal approach during the intense battle. It’s a striking image of redemption that shows that there’s always a better way to resolve conflicts. Then Espilar learns that victory is more than just a win on the battlefield, as it’s a result of personal journey and growth.

When Kenshin learns about Dr. Elder’s identity her explanation is seriously insightful. Later when Dr. Elder reveals her true individuality to the people of Yokohama, it’s a moment that’s full of revelation.

We also see that Dr. Elder observes Kenshin at a profound level which gives Megumi a chance to see through those secretive eyes as well. Kenshin nods and follows what Dr. Elder suggests to him to live the life that he deserves.

Throughout the ups and downs of the battles and alliances, the characters form a beautiful tapestry of friendship, redemption, and unexpected twists, which I really enjoyed from the context.
