Rurouni Kenshin Ep 20 – The Narrative

At the urging of his friends, Kenshin shares a captivating tale from his travels. During his visit to Yokohama, he encounters Dankichi, a rickshaw puller, and witnesses a medical emergency involving a collapsing woman. Dr. Elder, a benevolent foreigner, steps in to provide aid, only to face opposition from a covetous doctor named Deian Ishizu. Kenshin intervenes, thwarting Ishizu’s attempt to harm the woman.

Grateful for Kenshin’s assistance, Dankichi transports the ailing woman to a hospital. Dr. Elder, expressing gratitude, extends an invitation for afternoon tea. However, Kenshin’s keen observation inside a restaurant reveals a potential threat: a man carrying a Western-style sword. As they explore Yokohama together, Kenshin and Dr. Elder decide to spend the night at a hotel, where Kenshin accidentally discovers Dr. Elder’s true identity as a woman.

Meanwhile, Ishizu, determined to eliminate Dr. Elder, seeks assistance from a foreign ally. This ally, Espilar, eagerly anticipates a confrontation with Kenshin, having recognized him earlier. The stage is set for a clash between opposing forces in this intriguing tale of honor, conspiracy, and unexpected revelations.

The unexpected revelation of Dr. Elder’s true identity adds a layer of suspense, and the presence of a foreign ally and assassin (Espilar) hints at future conflicts and confrontations. Well, the lady-like voice somehow made me wonder if this Elder doctor actually a man in the first place. However, my suspicions were true.
  4. Cultural Setting: The story is set in Yokohama, providing a cultural backdrop that adds depth to today’s plot. The clash between traditional and Western influences, as seen in the attitudes toward medicine and the design of the sword, adds an extra layer of interest. This was fresh in the narrative as well.
